I duathlon’d it!

Oh yes I did!

In true “Shannon Fashion”, I decided about 8 hours prior. So at 10:30 at night there we were in the garage getting me “fit” into Mike’s road bike. It was Mike (my hubby), my sister Lindsay and her hubby Mike! I had never ridden his bike before. He got it when I was pregnant so I really didn’t have the opportunity.  Sitting in our garage Mike tried to get me to “clip in”.  That was a DEFINITE no go. It was quite the cluster.  I will try, just not at that point.

My sister Lindsay was running the duathlon as well.  She however was a planner and was planning on it for a while – she is actually the one that got me excited about it!  So onto the details…

First, let’s establish what this particular duathlon (Honey Creek Inn First Annual Duathlon) consisted of:

2.5k run • 22k bike • 5k run

It was an experience to say the least!  I had absolutely NO training.  I mean, come on!  When I did the duathlon, Preslee was 5 weeks old.

I have always wanted to do a duathlon and I can’t wait to do this same race next year after I am able to train – nothing but up from here with this duathlon!  It can’t get any worse, let’s hope at least. This was a fantastic course and VERY well organized.

My goal was 2 hours.  I finished in 2 hours and 2 minutes. Not setting any records, but I finished AND I only walked twice.

There were some KILLER hills in this course.  The worse was probably at 3 mile and Murray Lake. OMGosh!  I was seriously going 4 miles per hour on my bike.  WOW!  My max speed on the bike was 26 miles per hour.  Now that didn’t happen often, but I wanted to see how fast I could get going about half way through the bike course.  It was fun 🙂

I honestly didn’t think the last leg of running, the 5K, was going to happen.  When I came in from my bike portion, I could barely walk on my ankle.  It hurt SO bad! I was talking to my sister’s Mike as well as my Mike in the transition/exit area.  I just didn’t know what to do.  Well, I did it.  And surprisingly my ankle didn’t hurt once throughout the whole run.  Off I went, up ANOTHER hill.  This course was SO hilly.

About 1.5 miles into the run, I saw a guy on a bike going the apparent wrong way.  Turns out it was my awesome hubby.  He went with me the whole rest of the way. It was nice having someone to talk to – between gasps of course! Turns out the course may have been closer to 4 miles…but who’s counting!

Anyway, it was great to get out on the road again.  I’m so glad I did this!  Now…thinking about another duathlon in a couple weeks…hmm…  🙂
