the foot…the lovely foot

An update.

As you may have known, I had surgery back in October 2009.  Adalynn was about 6 months old.  I had a neuroma removed in my foot and my calf muscle lengthened.  It has been great, until recently.

I always have people asking what a neuroma is and I found a good webpage about it HERE.  But basically, here is an explanation:

Neuromas are generally benign or non-cancerous growths of nerve tissue, developing in various parts of the body. Morton’s Neuromas are confined to the nerves of the foot, most commonly, between the third and fourth toes. The condition involves a thickening of the tissue around one of the digital nerves leading to the toes and does not qualify as an actual tumor. The affliction causes a sharp, burning pain, usually in the region of the ball of the foot. A patient’s toes may also sting, burn or exhibit numbness. Often, the symptoms have been likened to “walking on a marble.”What happens when a nerve heals (forgive this explanation, it’s not medical, it’s how I understand it), is a small ball forms at the point of the cut.  Since it can’t heal and repair itself, it does the best it can at “healing”.  Well between the ball that forms and possible scar tissue, it can cause another neuroma in the healing process.

I started having pain in my foot again.  Ugh! So sad and disappointing. I went in to see the doctor and he said it is so incredibly rare that a reoccurrence would happen, however he has seen it a couple times.  He was quite shocked.  We started with a cortisone shot and if I had pain in the next couple weeks, there was no need to call and see him again.  Just schedule surgery.  So, today is that day. I called and left a message to schedule surgery.  I am not thrilled about this, as I HATE surgery.  However, I am thrilled about having NO MORE PAIN.  Having the kiddos to chase around and all the running I do, I just can’t have this.  I want to be able to run.  It is just so freeing and is essential for me mentally in having a healthy life.

Wish me luck.  Let the fun begin as I am hoping to have this done by the end of the year!
